Voice Program for Young Singers

Ages: 7 - 10 Class length: 45 minutes
Location: Armstrong Community Music School
Cost: $400
Songbirds performance class is a group voice class for young singers ages 7 to 10. This course will provide a foundation for singing and constructive performance for young singers. During this 12-week session, singers will learn a new song, while working on breathing techniques, age appropriate warm up exercises, and other music fundamentals, culminating in a final performance of their piece of music.
What are classes like?
These 45-minute classes will begin with age approriate vocal and breathing exercises that help us center and focus our attention. We will have time in each class to sing through new songs, speak our lyrics, and discuss what each song is about. Singers will spend time at the table to complete workbook activities. We will have sight-singing and flash card time on the floor where we focus on new concepts and work on sight singing skills. We also will have time for listening exercises where we listen to different singers and genres of music. Practice during the week will consist of completing workbook exercises, singing through assigned songs, and practicing sol-fa exercises. As students progress from the Introductory Level, they will build on their knowledge of music fundamentals and apply them to singing.
How are sessions structured?
We offer two sessions of the Songbirds program per year that run from September to early December, and late January to May. Each session is 12 weeks, observing any holidays or school breaks. Each level is divided into A and B sessions, utilizing the same workbook over the course of the school year. At the end of the Fall semester, the students will participate in an in class recital. A final performance will be held at the end of the school year.
New students will sign up for the Introductory Level A, and once they graduate out of that level, proceed to Intro B. While the information in the Introductory Level may be familiar information to students who have taken music classes or lessons, the introductory level is designed to help all students gain a foundation of learning a piece of music and performing by using any existing or acquired fundamentals such as rhythm and sight-singing.
