Armstrong Community Music School remains committed to serving Austin by providing excellent music education opportunities to all. ACMS has been fortunate as an organization to maneuver most classes and lessons to an online format during the shelter in place period. This includes free programming provided at several locations serving many of Austin’s most underserved populations as part of our Harmony Initiative. As a nonprofit organization ACMS always welcomes and seeks financial support to stay on track with the costs associated with keeping these commitments. Your unrestricted contribution ensures that ACMS will continue to provide these opportunities while offering stability for faculty and staff.

The steel pan is the only family of acoustic instruments to be invented in the 20th century. Originating in Trinidad/Tobago as a communal folk tradition, the steel orchestra has spread internationally through classical, popular, and traditional folk genres. The Steel Pan Jam Band at ACMS will explore all genres, including those from Trinidad, and will teach basic rhythmic and harmonic theory through playing. This class will be taught in the traditional way, by rote (i.e. by ear) so no prior music experience or training is required.

Group Piano for Homeschoolers (Ages 8-15)

Ages: 8-15 (varies by class)
Length: 60 minutes

Learn to play the piano! (And meet new friends too). Students will learn to navigate the 88 keys of the piano, play 5-note scales and I-V chords, learn to play familiar melodies, read musical notation, explore beat and rhythm, play musical games and listen to selected piano works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Kabalevsky, and many others. New concepts and skills will be introduced in each class, so students are expected to practice at home to retain information and build skills. This is a foundational class for piano technique and musicianship and to enjoy creative exploration at the piano with friends.

For the older students (ages 12-15), this class provides an opportunity for teens to learn to play the piano in a group setting; students will have opportunities to bring in their favorite music for sharing and exploring. We will explore a variety of musical styles in addition to skill-building.

No classes are currently scheduled.

Music Memory at ACMS

Ages: 8-12
Length: 60 minutes

Music Memory is an award winning program where students gain an appreciation for some of the world's greatest music. This is a class for homeschool children to explore a variety of great works by Classical composers. We will learn to identify the variety of instruments in a symphony, learn the distinction between a solo piece, chamber music, an orchestral piece, an opera, or a ballet! We will learn the stories of great composers asking questions like--from what country are they? Does their music tell us a story? What new sounds did they innovate? Melodic structure and form will be explored throughout the course. All material will be presented through games, puzzles, focused listening and hands-on activities. No previous music experience needed. The goal of this class is to engage the children in a listening journey to foster a lifetime love of music.

No classes are currently scheduled.
